- Before Sonja Henie came along,
- women had skated in mid-calf-length
- skirts. When Sonja competed in the
- Olympics at age 11, she appeared in a
- short (slightly above the knee), fur-
- trimmed dress. This was allowed
- because Sonja was just a kid. But with
- the shorter skirt came the freedom to
- try new moves, moves that before then
- had only been attempted by men.

- skating boots that matched her outfits.
- Before, skaters wore only black or
- "neutral" (light brown) boots.
