  1. Before Sonja Henie came along,
  2. women had skated in mid-calf-length
  3. skirts. When Sonja competed in the
  4. Olympics at age 11, she appeared in a
  5. short (slightly above the knee), fur-
  6. trimmed dress. This was allowed
  7. because Sonja was just a kid. But with
  8. the shorter skirt came the freedom to
  9. try new moves, moves that before then
  10. had only been attempted by men.

  12. Sonja was also the first skater to wear
  13. skating boots that matched her outfits.
  14. Before, skaters wore only black or
  15. "neutral" (light brown) boots.
